People aren't the only one's gaining weight. Many cars are too. The Audi R8 is one exception to the rule. And, it hasn't just shed a couple of pounds, either. The next-gen Audi R8 promises a 220-pound weight reduction compared to the 2011 model!
How did such a lean, mean speed machine manage to trim down and become stealthier yet? Well, unlike humans, it wasn't through relentless exercise, a juice diet, or the Hollywood Cookie diet (which has to be one of the most absurd fads to date). Rather, the new R8 shed over 200 pounds thanks to Audi's commitment to creating a chassis built from a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber.
Contrary to many Americans' misconception that bigger and heavier is stronger and better, the new lighter-weight Audi R8 actually gains 30-percent in torsional rigidity. Whether or not these improvements translate into a price hike remains to be seen. Of course, we'll let you know as soon as Audi announces an official starting M.S.R.P., which will likely be closer to 2014 - when the fierce machine is officially slated to hit showroom floors.
To be honest, though, we're not all that concerned about a change in price. We're far too distracted by the car's deft advancements and also the fact Audi will introduce one last face-lifted variant of the current 2012 R8, before they release the more drastically redesigned R8. That means we have something to look forward to, even before the arrival of the next-gen Audi R8, nearly three years down the road.
